A lot of Walmart stores allow RV overnight parking, which we've taken advantage of over the year. But an incident in Salt Lake City left us $150 short, chains on our tires, and thinking twice about ever pulling into another Walmart for the evening.

It's understandable - not only is Zion bigger in acreage, but its views are more grandiose, diverse, expansive and dramatic. There's also more hiking trails miles in Zion. But the scenery at Bryce is unparalleled to anywhere else.

Read MoreWe didn't realize until we arrived in Hurricane how close to Zion National Park (Zion Canyon part of the park) we were boondocked - 17 miles to be exact. From the two boondocking sites we stayed at we could see the Zion mountains in the horizon. The benefit of living this close to a national park is that we we aren't in a hurry to hike everything in a few days' time.
